If you’ve ever been told "it's all in your head" when describing pelvic pain, bladder leaks, or discomfort during intimacy—you're not alone.
In fact, you may have experienced a dangerous phenomenon that millions of women are now speaking out about: medical gaslighting.
A powerful recent article from NBC News revealed something women have known for decades: when it comes to pelvic pain and bladder dysfunction, women’s symptoms are routinely ignored, dismissed, or misdiagnosed by the medical system (NBC News, 2024).
This is not a fluke—it’s a systemic failure.
For decades, the default patient in research was a 165-pound white male. Women were excluded from most clinical trials until the 1990s.
As a result, doctors are still taught diagnostic frameworks that simply don’t reflect the female body—especially when it comes to the pelvic floor.
It’s no wonder that women presenting with pelvic symptoms are told they’re stressed, anxious, or exaggerating.
A 2014 study found 91% of women with chronic pain felt dismissed by their doctors.
And that dismissal has real consequences. In emergency rooms, men wait an average of 49 minutes for pain relief. Women?
Over 65 minutes—or they don’t receive it at all.
Even today, women are more likely to be sedated than given pain meds, and are often prescribed antidepressants for pain that is muscular, structural, or hormonal in nature.
Pelvic floor dysfunction affects 1 in 3 women over 40. Common symptoms include:
• Bladder leaks when you sneeze or laugh
• A constant urge to pee (even at night)
• Discomfort or pressure in your pelvis
• Pain with intercourse
• Feeling like your organs are "falling down"
Yet women who report these issues are often told it’s a normal part of aging.
Or worse—they’re told to "do Kegels" without any assessment, education, or guidance.
One woman in the NBC News article saw 10+ specialists before finally learning that her pain stemmed from a misdiagnosed prolapse. Others were offered hysterectomies or antidepressants—never a pelvic exam.
I’ll never forget one of my first patients—let’s call her Maria.
She had been leaking for years, terrified to sneeze in public or laugh too hard.
Her OB/GYN told her it was “normal,” handed her a prescription for estrogen cream, and sent her home.
No exam.
No questions.
Maria cried during our first visit—not just from relief, but because it was the first time someone believed her.
Within weeks of authentic self-care and simple at-home exercises, her symptoms improved.
No hormones.
No shame.
The medical system still clings to outdated assumptions about women:
• That we’re "too emotional"
• That pain is subjective and unreliable
• That pelvic pain and bladder issues must be psychological
These biases create a culture where women are more likely to be disbelieved, misdiagnosed, or treated with interventions that don’t address the root cause.
But here's the truth: you don’t necessarily need hormones, surgery, or shame to heal.
The pelvic floor is made up of muscles, fascia, and connective tissue.
Like any other part of the body, it can weaken, tighten, or become imbalanced.
Most pelvic floor dysfunctions are mechanical and neuromuscular problems—not hormonal or mental.
You've probably heard myths like:
– “Just do more Kegels.”
– “It's menopause—get used to it.”
– “Surgery is the only answer.”
These are outdated, one-size-fits-all approaches that ignore the uniqueness of your body.
The truth?
With the right guidance, your pelvic floor can respond beautifully to natural, targeted therapies—no matter your age or stage of life.
